When you’re going on a road trip, sometimes you just need more space than the interior and trunk that your vehicle offers. No one likes to sit with a suitcase or backpack in their lap. A quality rooftop cargo carrier offers extra storage space to bring everything you need on your trip, such as camping gear and fishing equipment, without sacrificing legroom.
There are three basic types of rooftop cargo carriers: hard shells, bags, and baskets. Hard shells provide the most protection for your belongings but can be difficult to store and aren’t always flexible enough to accommodate oddly shaped or overly large items. They also typically require roof racks on your vehicle. Bags are flexible and easy to install, and often don’t require roof racks. However, they are more prone to damage or leaking in heavy weather. Baskets provide a lot of flexibility, but your belongings are completely exposed to the wind and weather, so anything you transport in a basket is likely to get wet (no one wants to lay inside of a wet sleeping bag).
Whatever style best fits your needs, a good rooftop cargo carrier ensures that you don’t have to leave anything behind.
