Have you ever wanted to double, triple, or even quadruple your reading speed? Thanks to Boston-based startup Spritz, it might be a lot easier than you think. Spritz is an app that uses a unique single-word streaming technique to help you read text much faster than traditional reading methods.
“We stream words one at a time, positioned so your eye doesn’t have to move,” explains Frank Waldman, the company’s CEO.
According to Mr. Waldman, text streaming software has been around for over 30 years, but it's never caught on with consumers. The secret to Spritz’s success is the specific positioning of each word, which is maintained by coloring one letter in every word red and keeping that letter in the same spot.
Spritz can help you read any website at at least two times your normal reading speed.
For now, the company focuses on building apps for mobile products like tablets, smartphones, and even the Samsung Gear S watch, but there’s also a web app that lets you read any website using Spritz technology. There is one big limitation: Apple's iBooks app and Amazon’s Kindle don't support Spritz at this time, so it may be a while before you can relax and Spritz with a good book at the beach.
We got a chance to try out the software on the show floor at IFA Berlin (and you can try it for yourself here). Using the software on a computer or tablet is easy, and within five minutes we were reading at twice our normal speed, but the app's functionality on something as small as a smart watch is questionable. Then again, reading anything on a screen that tiny can be a challenge, and at least the Spritz app eliminates the need to scroll through a body of text. For Gear S owners who want to read on the go, the Spritz app may be the best option out there.
