'Quiet luxury' isn't so quiet anymore. People are screaming to the proverbial rooftops to get in on this sartorial trend of stealth wealth. It's said that good things hide in plain sight, and in the case of quiet luxury, all the style inspiration you need can be found in Netflix's Lift, an action-packed adventure film that follows a professional thief, Cyrus (played by Kevin Hart), his crew, and his ex-girlfriend Abby (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), as they attempt to pull off a heist on a 777 passenger plane flying from London to Zurich. To learn more about the cast's quiet luxury style, Reviewed sat down with the movie's costume designer, Antoinette Messam, to get an inside look at the glamorous costumes.
Creating a quiet luxury wardrobe
Take some 'quiet luxury' cues from Cyrus and suit up in a tan-colored suit and pants.
Cyrus and his crew of professional thieves have made millions off thefts of some of the world's most high-profile pieces of art, but as Messam says, you would never know that they're dripping in cash by the looks of their clothes. "They're beautiful, well-made pieces" she says. "And young and not trendy but timeless without hitting it over the head." Lift offered Messam the opportunity to design all of the costumes for Hart's Cyrus. His tailored suits, for example, were made with fabrics from London's famed Savile Row. The opening scenes of the film find Hart and his crew carrying out a heist in Venice, Italy, and he escapes the scene wearing a camel-colored fitted suit and pants—quiet luxury at its finest. On dressing the opposite of quiet luxury
Dress the opposite of 'quite luxury' by taking some cue's from Abby's Burberry bodysuit and Balmain cardigan.
While most of the cast keeps a low profile when it comes to costuming, in the final scenes of the movie Abby doesn't keep things quiet with her Burberry plaid bodysuit and Balmain sweater. Messam admits that Abby's last outfit is where she "hit it over the head" when it came to exuding luxury.
For a look with an air similar to Abby's, consider investing in a tank top that proudly shows off its designer's logo, like the Loewe Anagram Rib-Knit Tank. This top can pretty much go with any sweater or jacket you wish to pair it with, and it comes in three colors: white, black, and grey. Loewe's tank may not be as loud as a bodysuit clad in Burberry plaid, but the recognition of its logo immediately screams wealth and luxury.
