Editor’s Note: This story was written before Target removed some Pride merchandise. The following items may or may not still be available.
Every year when Target’s pride collection comes out, the internet explodes. Some people criticize it, some people love it. This year, there’s a little bit of both. It feels kind of icky to shop for LGBTQ+ merchandise from a major retailer when you could just go to a small queer-owned business. But this year, Target is featuring products made by members of the LGBTQ+ community.
So, if you want to shop the Target Pride collection and keep a clear conscience, we’ve rounded up a few select items made by members of the queer community. You’ll see items from designers like Anjellica Colliard and Humberto Cruz and businesses like TomboyX, FLAVNT, The PHLUID Project, Ash & Chess, and more.
Pride merch for adults
1. Short Sleeve Checkered Skater Dress
This loud dress comes in a checkered rainbow pattern, designed by Brooklyn-based graphic designer Alice Butts. The large flowy design is helpful for those of us who might not want to show off our curves (or lack-thereof) but still wear a pretty dress. Made of 100% cotton, this dress will keep you cool all summer long.
2. Non-Binary Ringer Short Sleeve T-Shirt
Best Pride merch: ringer
Ever since the 2023 Target Pride Collection came out, I’ve seen so many people freaking out about this shirt. The grocery bag aesthetic combined with the cute ringer t-shirt is literally the queer agenda. Designed by the gender-free apparel company The PHLUID Project, they really went above and beyond with this one. If you’re thinking about getting one, I’d suggest buying fast as I’m sure it will sell out soon.
3. 'Queer' Short Sleeve T-Shirt
Best Pride merch: queer shirt
This lavender shirt is so cute and fun, perfect for the summer. With the word “Queer!” written on it several times in a variety of colors, your identity will be known when wearing this. The adorable design is from Ash & Chess, a queer-owned stationary company based in Kingston, NY. It’s the perfect t-shirt to wear not just for Pride Month, but all year long.
4. Rainbow Checkered Swim Shorts
Best Pride merch: checkered shorts
These checkered swim shorts are the perfect way to start the summer. Created in partnership with Humankind Swim, these shorts were made specifically with the idea that they could fit people of all shapes, sizes, and identities. Designed by Alice Butts, these subtle rainbow shorts are a must-have this summer.
5. Rainbow Checkered Bikini Swim Top
Best Pride merch: checkered top
To go alongside the swim shorts, you might want a top. This swim top has a “light binding effect” which is a great option to have at a major retailer such as Target. The scoop neck design by Alice Butts really helps to make your chest not a focal point of the look, while doing its job of keeping you covered up and supported. Just keep in mind, if you have a larger chest the binding effect will probably be less helpful and if you want that appearance, you might benefit from an add-on such as TransTape.
6. Short Sleeve Boilersuit
Best Pride merch: Boiler Suit
Coming in a gorgeous lavender color, this boilersuit is made of a cotton/rayon blend that shouldn’t be overbearingly hot. The subtle Pride patch is a nice touch, bringing this a step above factory worker chic. Once again, designed by the infamous Alice Butts, we salute you for your contribution to the nonbinary, jumpsuit-wearing community.
7. 'Trans People Will Always Exist' Short Sleeve T-Shirt
Best Pride merch: Always exist shirt
Ash & Chess are at it again with this colorblock-esque t-shirt. With green sleeves and a pink ringer neck, this black shirt bears the phrase “Trans People Will Always Exist!” In the midst of the fight for trans rights across the country, this shirt will help you show your support for the community—while also looking fashionably cute.
8. Long Sleeve Mesh Blouse
Best Pride merch: mesh blouse
This wouldn’t be a proper Pride collection without at least one mesh shirt. This one by Alice Butts goes a step above by being not only mesh, but tie-dyed. This low-key trans-flag-colored mesh top is perfect to wear to any party this summer with a cute little bra underneath (or not! You do you!) to be just a tad bit scandalous.
9. 'Girls Gays & Theys' Short Sleeve T-Shirt
Best Pride merch: short sleeve
This is a classic phrase made into an adorable design—what more could you want? Made by the Austin-based queer clothing brand FLAVNT Streetwear, this shirt was made by and for the “girls, gays, and theys.” With 100% cotton fabric and below-hip length, this shirt is great for anyone to wear and can really be worn to match any style.

10. Orange Shortalls
Best Pride merch: orange shortalls
Alice Butts coming in clutch with another banging one-piece, but this time, it’s a pair of shortalls (short overalls). Coming in this muted orange color, there’s a little Pride patch in the top left corner to make it snazzier. These shortalls are made of a cotton-blend with spandex, which is perfect for people of all sizes to be comfortable in these.
11. 'Support Trans Futures' Short Sleeve
Best Pride merch: trans futures shirt
With everything going on in the world right now, trans people need our support more than ever. This design by Ash & Chess features the phrase “Support Trans Futures” on a trans-flag-colored short sleeve shirt. The crewneck t-shirt is made of a soft cotton blend which should keep you cool for the summer, whether you’re at a Pride Parade or just out to brunch with friends.
12. Black Shortalls
Best Pride merch: black shortalls
We’ve got another pair of shortalls for you — this time, by San Diego-based illustrator and graphic designer Humberto Cruz. These come in all black with rainbow colored smiling hearts across the side-stomach area. These shortalls could literally go with anything you own—wear any colored shirt underneath it (or not!) and it would match gorgeously. You really can’t go wrong with black and smiling hearts.
13. ‘Trans Pride Trans Power’ Short Sleeve T-Shirt
Best Pride merch: Trans Pride Trans Power shirt
This powerful black t-shirt really gets the message across. With the phrase “Trans Pride, Trans Power” in white, blue, and pink right on the chest, you’ll be showing your support for the trans community front and center. Although it’s a simple design, it’s extremely meaningful and yet still fashionable. You can wear this with jeans, a skirt, overalls, etc.—and you’ll still look good thanks to this design by The PHLUID Project.
14. TomboyX Swim 6" Racerback Unisuit Bathing Suit
Best Pride merch: bathing suit
We couldn’t have a list of Target’s Pride Collection without including at least one piece from TomboyX. The queer-owned company has been collaborating with Target for a few years now, going so far as to getting “compression tops” (I.e., binders) sold at the major retailer. One of their infamous gender-neutral swimsuits is featured in the collection. The 6” inseam makes it great for those with thicker thighs and want some more coverage. This unisuit comes with UPF 50 sun protection, blocking out the sun’s rays to an extent, and has quick dry fabric to keep you comfortable. The racerback design was apparently fit tested on people of all sizes so it won’t pinch and ride up.
Pride merch for kids
15. Sleeveless Pink A-Line Dress
Best Pride merch: a-line dress
This pretty pink dress is perfect for children of all gender identities—it’ll look cute on everyone! Designed by Humberto Cruz, this sleeveless dress comes with adjustable straps with cute bow detailing and a mesh tutu. The embroidered rainbow heart on the chest is emphasized by the A-line of the dress. It’s just a perfectly cute dress for the summer, with a subtle hint of Pride.
16. 'Just Be You' Rash Guard Top
Best Pride merch: Just Be You shirt
Created in partnership with Humankind Swim, Humberto Cruz designed this rash guard for children to wear during their summer activities. Featuring the message, “Just be you and feel the love," kids are encouraged to be their true selves and express themselves freely. Made of a nylon/spandex blend, this rash guard is perfect to wear in or out of the water.
17. Sleeveless Romper
Best Pride merch: sleveless romper
Similar to the black adult shortalls, Humberto Cruz made a somewhat matching toddler romper with the same vibe. Made of recycled polyester, this romper has an embroidered rainbow on the chest and the phrase “Be Kind” underneath it. The button fasteners at the top make this easy to get in and out of, which is perfect for the active but fashionable toddler.
18. AOP Bodysuit
Best Pride merch: bodysuit
For the babies in your life, they can express Pride too with this colorful onesie. This all-over print bodysuit features a plethora of different characters, ranging from a mermaid to flamingos in roller-skates to bears with rainbow flags, and different motivational phrases like “Be True to You” and “I Believe in You,” all designed by Humberto Cruz. Made from a soft fabric with added spandex, this onesie has lap shoulders and crotch snaps for easy diaper-changing access. Your baby will be the cutest kid at the Pride parade in this bodysuit!
19. 'People' Short Sleeve T-Shirt
Best Pride merch: People shirt
Designed by Oakland-based queer artist Anjelica Colliard, this shirt for kids promotes diversity and inclusion. The crew-neck fit is comfortable with the recycled polyester fabric, making this the perfect shirt to match with a nice pair of jeans or shorts. The pink color is not too bright to be obnoxious but will help your kid to stand out from a crowd and flaunt their true identity.
Pride merch for pets
20. Pride Butterflies Plush Dog Toy Set
Best Pride merch: dog toy
Designed by Humberto Cruz, this 2-piece toy set is perfect for any queer household with a dog. These two smiling butterflies don the pansexual flag and the nonbinary flag, to help promote diversity and inclusion of different identities—to your dog. Perfect for playing fetch with, these toys are so cute it’d be hard to pass them up.
21. ‘Proud of You Always’ Dog and Cat Tank Top
Best Pride merch: dog and cat tank top
So, you’re bringing your dog to a Pride Month event, but they have nothing to wear? Problem solved. This design by Humberto Cruz will have everyone wanting to give your dog a hug (or at least take a cute pic of them). And it’s not just for dogs—your cat can wear this too if you’d like. Just good luck trying to get it on them.
Pride merch for home
22. Pride Cooler Bag
Best Pride merch: cooler bag
Summer means going to the beach with friends. And obviously, you need a stylish cooler bag to take with you to keep your drinks nice and cold. This bag by Anjelica Colliard dons four individuals of different styles and identities with the text “Chosen Family is Love.” For many queer people, their families don’t accept them for who they are and so they must find their own family within their community of friends and peers. For a bag with a beautiful message and great functionality, this cooler will help keep you cool all summer long.
23. 'Grow At Your Own Pace' Attached Saucer Planter
Best Pride merch: planter
This uniquely adorable planter is something I’d expect to see at a local craft fair, not at Target, but I’m extremely glad that I can get it there. Displaying the phrase “Grow At Your Own Pace,” this ceramic planter comes with a drainage hole that leads into a green dish that it sits on top of. Perfect for indoor use, this planter is hand-painted with a design by one of Target’s LGBTQ+ artist partners, Bird and Marc. Any plant you place in here should hopefully grow to its full potential!
24. Self Made Indoor Throw Pillow
Best Pride merch: Pillow
Who doesn’t love a throw pillow? This one by New England illustrators Bird and Marc features the words “Self Made” embroidered on it in the trans-flag colors. Made of polyester, this throw pillow is a great addition to any queer household.
25. Gender Fluid Pride Mug
Best Pride merch: gender fluid mug
I had to include this mug by Bird and Marc because it might be my favorite item out of Target’s entire 2023 Pride Collection. This “Gender Fluid” mug is currently sold out at a lot of stores, but as we get closer to June, I’m hoping (praying!) that they’ll restock it. Coming in a bright lime green, this mug is not only dishwasher and microwave safe, but it has an easy-grip handle with ribbed texture, making it a joy to hold. Plus, who wouldn’t want to take a sip of their coffee and be like, “Ah yes, here I am, drinking my Gender Fluid.” It’s hilarious. I love it. Great job, Bird and Marc.
