Not to toot my own horn or anything but I feel like I was on the corset top train far before the trend really kicked off on TikTok. Back in fall 2021, when COVID-19 was finally starting to feel like it was more in the rearview, I went shopping to celebrate the semi-return to normal life. After going into all of my favorite brick-and-mortar stores and coming up empty-handed in terms of tops, I was feeling pretty besmirched.
At that moment, my mom stopped me in my tracks. We were walking past Victoria's Secret when she spotted a cropped black corset that she encouraged me to try on, thinking that it'd pair well with a Free People duster I had just purchased. Long story short, I loved it so much that I bought it in four colors. Since then, I've kept an eye out for other corsets that can pass as tops but have never come across another style that I truly loved. That was, of course, until I got my hands on the TikTok-beloved Urban Outfitters corset top.
We love this adorable Urban Outfitters corset top for its comfy fit, adorable look, and slimming silhouette.
What I love about the UO corset top
The Out From Under Modern Love Corset is one of many Urban Outfitters corset tops, but it's my personal favorite style from the brand (not to mention a top pick among over 4,000 shoppers). Sold in two color block options and five solid shades, the Urban Outfitters lace corset top features a stretchy fitted bodice complete with unlined underwire cups, eye-catching boning, and nine hook-and-eye closures running down the back. The surprisingly cozy silhouette features a universally-flattering balconette bra shape with stretchy adjustable straps to help tailor the perfect fit.
Logistically, I'm typically a size 12/14 and a 38C/36D bra size. I ordered the Plum and Blue colorway in a size XL and was pleased with how well it fit. My boobs weren't overflowing in the dainty unlined (read: unpadded) cups the way they normally do and I was able to comfortably latch it on the tightest hook-and-eye closures. Best of all, while the side and back panels of the corset are sheer, the cups are opaque, so you don't have to worry about it being too, too revealing. In that way, the Urban Outfitters corset is one silhouette that can truly pass as a going-out top (not that I'm saying you shouldn't wear whatever you want out, even if it is revealing; rather, that if your goal is to embrace a sultry style without baring it all, the Urban Outfitters lace corset top is ready and waiting).
What I don't love about the UO corset top
The one thing that I don't love about the Out From Under Modern Love Corset is that it's a tad longer than I'd like on the sides. While the back of the corset has a nice rise to it and the front has a trendy curved, elongated silhouette, the sides come a bit too far beyond my natural waist, which makes it constrict my curves a bit (even though it fully fits). I would rather that the sides were an inch or so higher so as to not interfere with the slope out into my hips. As is, I find that this corset top is probably intended to be worn with lower-cut bottoms or on someone with a straighter build but as someone who prefers high-waisted silhouettes and falls within the midsize collective, the length offers a bit to be desired.
How to wash Urban Outfitters corset top
As far as how to wash the Urban Outfitters corset top, the tag suggests washing it by hand, but you can totally get away with tossing it in the wash. The trick is to place it in a mesh garment bag in a cold gentle cycle. Once it's done washing, lay it out flat to dry, et voila!
How to style a corset top
My favorite way to style a corset top is with high-waisted pants and skirts. When testing out the Urban Outfitters corset top, I wore it with the Never Fully Dressed Portrait Dorris Skirt (which is sadly now sold out), and with a pair of (also now sold out) wide-leg pants from Anthropologie. In both cases, I paired the corset with the chunky Kurt Geiger Orson Crystal Slide Sandals ($185) to keep the overall 'fit more casual.
Had I been going out-out (as opposed to simply out to dinner), I would have opted for a matching mini skirt (like the Indah x REVOLVE Cori Gathered Seamless Mini Skirt, $66) paired with the Dolce Vita Lilac Crackled Stella Ashby Platform Heels ($99.90, normally $140) for a pop of whimsical high-contrast color, the Larroudé Wanda Platform Mule In Blue Denim ($330) to really lean into the early '00s trend that the corset top is inspired by, or the Circus NY Pink Punch Bobbie Sculpted Heel ($49.95; normally $90) because the colors are just too perfect.
I'd complete the outfit with the Kurt Geiger London Kensington Bag ($375) because the purple and blue stripes pair beautifully with the colors of the Urban Outfitters lace corset top and my general motto as a maximalist is all the color, always.
Is the Urban Outfitters corset top worth it?
The Urban Outfitters lace corset top is sold in seven colors.
Yes
One word: Absolutely. The Urban Outfitters lace corset top is chic, comfortable, and sold in seven colors in women's sizes S to XL. It looks and feels more expensive than it is, it's easy to care for, and can be mixed into a variety of outfits, whether to be worn out of the house or in the bedroom. Such a versatile garment for less than $60? I'm sold.
