Too many of us have experienced the discomfort of thigh chafing on a warm spring or summer day. And not enough of us have found a product that provides chafe protection. Enter Thigh Society, a brand established to eliminate thigh chafing through the use of carefully designed base layers. I jumped at the opportunity to test Thigh Society because I could see myself reaching for them over and over again—whether on a day I’m wearing a dress and want some shorts underneath, or when I’m wearing my favorite linen pants that can feel scratchy on my thighs if I walk too long in them.

I opted to test The Cooling ($39) shorts in the shortest 5-inch inseam so I could wear them under mini dresses and skirts without needing to scrunch the fabric up to avoid them peaking out. I went with the pale pink color "Blush" to see how opaque the fabric looked once on.

The Cooling is available in six lengths—5, 7, 9, 12, 17, and 21 inches. Best of all, the shorts come in 11 colors and in women's sizes XS/S to 5XL/6XL.

I loved The Cooling shorts, especially as a layering piece.

What is Thigh Society?

Thigh Society claims that its shorts pull heat and moisture away from the body with a "silky, hi-tech performance fabric" that provides "very light coverage" and "the thinnest base layer possible." They aren’t shapewear, but claim to stay tight to the body without rolling down or riding up.

What it’s like wearing Thigh Society shorts

I can attest that the shorts feel ultra-lightweight and don’t squeeze at my stomach regardless of how high-waisted I make them underneath my clothes. They feel like second skin, and for the most part, I don’t need to adjust them at all during the day.

That being said, on a few occasions, the pant legs rolled up my thighs and kept rolling up every time I fixed them. Looking back, I think this only happened when I was wearing clothing that was longer and fit tighter, like a midi bodycon dress. The length and friction may have interfered with the shorts. I’d be curious to see if one of the longer inseam options would correct this issue for me.

Thigh Society set out to design wardrobe staples that eliminate thigh chafing.

Setting aside the snafu of the shorts riding up with certain outfits, I really like The Cooling shorts for an easy, comfortable base layer underneath dresses or skirts. I haven’t experienced any chafing or sweating while wearing them. Before trying out Thigh Society, I reached for regular bike shorts under dresses and they were too thick in fabric or in the waistband to feel comfortable underneath clothing. While you can see my underwear through the pale blush hue, the shorts are opaque enough that I feel more secure and covered than if I wore nothing.

If you have yet to find an anti-chafe gel that works well for you, or if you prefer the method of wearing a base layer to mitigate friction, The Cooling shorts are a great option to try—and I can see why they have almost 7,000 5-star reviews. They’re the easiest part of your outfit!
