It sounds too good to be true: a pair of jeans that feel like wearing sweatpants, but that’s precisely what men's fashion brand, Mugsy, is promising. As someone who often finds himself having to make the difficult choice between being comfortable and looking presentable, I was curious to see if Mugsy jeans really were as comfortable as they claim.
What you need to know about Mugsy Jeans
Mugsy is a men’s clothing brand that launched in 2016 with a line of slim stretch jeans. Since then, it has branched out into other clothing categories like chinos, corduroy, tops, jackets, and swimming apparel, but stretch denim remains a core part of its offering.
For this review, I tested the Mugsy Fultons. The jeans are made from a blend of 68% cotton, 19% Rayon, 11% polyester, and 2% spandex. They come in Mugsy fit, Casual Fit, and Boot Cut and are available in a range of waist sizes from 28 to 44. Available lengths include 30, 32, 34, and 36, depending on the waist size.
What I like about Mugsy Jeans
Mugsy jeans can be worn cuffed or uncuffed.
They’re comfortable and forgiving
At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, the Mugsy Fultons might be the most comfortable pair of jeans I have ever worn. The super-stretchy denim feels more like sweatpants, and despite wearing them all day, I never felt constricted or uncomfortable.
More importantly, as a reasonably hefty fellow, I appreciate clothing that is forgiving both in appearance and coverage. The Mugsy jeans fit me perfectly and were snug where they should be and loose where needed. In addition to wearing them during my usual day-to-day activities like sitting at my desk, cooking, and walking, I also decided to do some handy work around the house to put their comfort to the test. The jeans provided enough stretch to keep me limber while resealing the shower, but more importantly, at no point during the job did I experience the dreaded plumbers crack.
They look like authentic denim jeans
While they may feel like a comfy pair of sweats, the Mugsy Fultons are indistinguishable from a regular pair of denim jeans. So while they are comfortable enough to throw on while hanging around the house, they’re smart and stylish enough to wear while out and about.
They’re full of small details that make all the difference
Confession time: I’m a bit of a denim snob. I own a few pairs of stretch jeans, but when I’m making an effort, I prefer to wear selvedge denim with the hems turned up to expose the unmistakable red and white stitch. While the Mugsy’s aren’t selvedge, the company has covered the seam with a strip of fabric that looks pretty neat when turned up. It’s a nice touch and gives the jeans a level of versatility that I appreciate.
What I don’t like about Mugsy Jeans
The jean fabric is lightweight, so they may not stand up to cold weather conditions.
They won't change your mind about stretch denim
When it comes to stretch denim, I’m firmly agnostic. I don’t wear them exclusively, but I’ll reach for them in my closet when I want something comfortable and vaguely presentable. For this reason, I didn’t need much convincing when it came to the benefits of Mugsy. However, there are still those horrified at the ubiquity of spandex-infused denim. And while I am pretty sold on Mugsy’s, I don’t see these jeans convincing raw denim devotees to ditch the selvedge in favor of stretch. While there’s no denying their comfort and style, if you don’t like stretch denim, then you probably won’t like Mugsy jeans.
They’re too lightweight for winter
The stretch denim fabric of the Mugsy Fulton jeans is pretty thin and light. This can have its benefits. Thanks to some truly bizarre weather in February and March, I could try out Mugsy jeans in temperatures ranging from 23° all the way up to 82°. The jeans were wonderfully cool and airy on the hotter days, but when temperatures dropped, they did little to shield me from the elements. If you live in an area with a more moderate climate or just run hot, then Mugsy’s will be ideal, but they won't offer much protection for those living in colder areas.
Should you buy Mugsy Jeans?
Yes, they’re the most comfortable pair of stretch denim jeans I’ve ever worn
Mugsy Jeans are stylish and feel great to wear and are ideal for anyone who wants to look good but isn’t willing to sacrifice comfort. I’m pretty much sold on Mugsy Jeans to the point where I’m considering making them the de facto pair of stretch denims in my wardrobe.
