If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably been curious about Canada Goose—the makers of stylish parkas that have become ubiquitous on extreme weather expeditions, city streets, and movie sets alike. Although the company has been around for decades, the brand’s cold-weather gear recently has become co-opted by the style set, becoming a staple for folks who want to stay warm and look incredible. Though we previously tested and loved the brand’s women’s parkas, we wanted to see how their menswear fared in comparison.
Canada Goose sent me the Lawrence Long Puffer, a plush and seriously luxurious parka that is rated for especially frigid temperatures. I’ve been wearing the coat over the last two months. Read on to find out why I may find it hard to return to any of my other winter-weather staples.
This luxurious parka is rated to withstand extreme weather conditions and keep you warm in temperatures as low as -13°F.
What is Canada Goose?
First established in 1957, Canada Goose is an extreme weather outfitter that offers outerwear including parkas, puffers, bombers, raingear, and more. For much of its history, the brand exclusively offered parkas for extreme weather conditions (think once-in-a-lifetime treks up the world’s highest peaks), but in 2011, Canada Goose expanded its offerings to include lightweight outerwear and apparel for diverse climates. Since 2015, the brand has also established itself as a year-round fashion player, offering spring collections of lightweight gear that is suitable for rain and windy conditions. Today, Canada Goose offers a full range of clothing, shoes, and accessories designed for the outdoors.
At the forefront of its operations is a commitment to sustainability. The brand aims to achieve net zero emissions by the end of 2025—a goal that is moving along thanks to its Humanature initiative, which offers a number of products made from recycled, organic, and biodegradable materials. Most recently, earlier this year Canada Goose launched its own recommerce platform called Generations, which allows shoppers to resell and purchase authentic pre-owned products, keeping them in circulation and out of landfills.
What I like about the Canada Goose Lawrence Long Puffer
From the ultimate warmth to its backpack straps, the Lawrence Long Puffer is designed with comfort, utility, and warmth in mind.
This coat is seriously warm
The makers of the Lawrence Long Puffer probably hadn’t envisioned its use being put to the test in suburban Maryland. After all, the coat is rated for weather conditions from 5°F to -13°F, rather than the 25°F to 50°F weather we’ve been enjoying so far this season. Nevertheless, I threw on the Lawrence on many an outing, from long walks to see Christmas lights to quick trips to the supermarket. Almost immediately, I was shocked at how excellent the insulation is on this coat.
Though I haven’t yet had the opportunity to test it out in a more extreme environment, I can see just how useful it would be in especially frigid conditions. This is thanks to its plush 750 Fill Power Duck Down filling, one of the best natural insulators. Although Canada Goose has come under fire for its dependence on animal materials, the brand has been certified under the Responsible Down Standard and has also ceased production of animal fur in other styles.
The backpack straps are genius
Although the coat is chock full of useful features, including reflective stripes for visibility, rib-knit cuffs that keep cold air out, and a two-way zipper that allows for added motion—my favorite feature was easily the interior backpack straps. The two discrete vinyl straps on the inside of the coat allow you to wear the coat on your back, which is especially useful for folks who might need to go in and out of the elements while out skiing or on expeditions.
In my case, it meant that when I began feeling a bit too warm on a recent trip to Target, I wore the Lawrence on my back and was able to get my shopping done without needing to hold onto what is admittedly a pretty big coat. It made me wonder why this isn’t a standard feature in more coats!
The minimalist design is elegant
Although the coat is rather large thanks to its plush filling and long length, the design is sophisticated and streamlined. The Lawrence is clean and minimalist, and the rich black color is stylish enough to go with any cold-weather outfit. Most of all, it’s seriously comfortable. Every single time I wore this puffer, I felt like I was being hugged by a warm and cozy cloud.
What I don’t like about Canada Goose Lawrence Long Puffer
I love the Lawrence Long Puffer coat's length and the reflective strip along the back for safety.
The pricing can be prohibitive, but the quality is outstanding
Honestly, there wasn’t much I disliked about the Lawrence Long Puffer. After all, it’s stylish, incredibly insulating, and has a lot of clever design elements built right in. The one point of contention, however, is its price-tag. At nearly $1,400, this coat would be totally inaccessible to many shoppers. That being said, it’s easy to see why the coat fetches such a sum: It’s beautifully made, feels truly luxurious, and—as I said above—is the warmest coat I think I’ve ever worn.
Is the Canada Goose Lawrence Long Puffer worth it?
This coat isn't just stylish, it's one of the warmest I've ever worn.
Absolutely, if you don’t mind spending the money
If you can swing it, the Lawrence Long Puffer is absolutely worth the investment. And if you live somewhere plagued by frigid winters, I’d go so far as to say that it should be required wearing. My experience confirms why Canada Goose has become the standard for cold-weather gear both in the great outdoors and city sidewalks. You’ll stay warm, comfortable, stylish, and know that you’ve made a solid purchase that you’ll be able to use for years and years to come.
I loved the Lawrence Long Puffer’s superior warmth and handy backpack straps.
