The HP Smart Tank Printer that changed my mind

This home printer surprised me—it’s affordable, easy to use, and doesn't guzzle ink

I’ve owned my fair share of home printers over the years, and let’s just say...the bar is low. Between constantly buying ink and dealing with complicated connections, I’ve never been overly impressed. After my last printer bit the dust, I just accepted life without one, but I’ve been missing the convenience and simple luxuries they bring.

With Easter coming up, I wanted to print a few things at home—cards, signs, crafts, and some family photos for the kids’ baskets. I started looking around, not expecting much, but then I came across a deal that actually makes sense. The HP Smart Tank All-In-One Printers use ink bottles instead of cartridges, and they’re on sale right now.

3 reasons why this printer isn’t like the others

You get a bigger bang for your buck

Reviewed has declared HP as having made some of the best printers of 2025, so the original price is about what I expected to pay for something with seemingly such advanced features—but the current discount makes the purchase even more tempting.

As a mom, I’m always after affordable options, so the limited-time 36% savings on the HP Smart Tank 6001, which works as a printer, scanner, and copier, is an excellent choice for my family. There is a lower-cost option, the HP 5101 printer, and one with the best print quality, the HP 7602 printer, but for my purposes, the mid-range model will more than suffice for seasonal crafts and the kids’ homework assignments.

It’s much easier to use

Setup is usually where I give up, but not this time. I used the HP Smart app to get the wireless printer set up for spring festivities as soon as possible. It was much easier than my last printer’s idea, which forced me to use the tiny screen for the whole process.

Then, I filled up the ink. I honestly expected the filling process to create a huge mess—I mean, when is ink ever not messy?—but the bottles only release ink when they’re securely fitted onto the ink tanks, and I didn’t get a speck on my fingers. After doing the first color myself, I let my kids get in on the fun before we got to crafting together.

The ink is far less expensive

Ink is where most printers break your spirit—and your budget. But HP’s cartridge-free printers use a refillable tank system with ink bottles. Plus, it comes with enough ink to print up to 6,000 color or black-and-white pages out of the box, which is kind of wild.

That’s more than enough for me and my kids to go on an all-out Easter printing spree. So far, we’ve printed coloring pages, decorations, bunny ears to cut out and wear, and cute photos of the family. I can’t even deny the print quality of these photos—it’s stunning and looks like I got them professionally developed.

Final thoughts on the HP Smart Tank

I never thought I could rely on a home printer or love it, but here we are. What surprised me most wasn’t just the savings on the HP printer or its easy setup—it’s how much more we’ve used it than I expected. From Easter crafts and classroom projects to printing return labels and recipes, it’s quickly become part of our weekly routine.
