Some smart home gadgets are so flashy and "unintuitive" that they can inadvertently exclude consumers who like what they like and are afraid to stray from what they know. Let's look at smart thermostats. We're the first to admit that something like our favorite Nest Learning Thermostat takes some getting used to. Yes, even experts like us run into snags occasionally.
For homeowners wanting to keep better tabs on their energy expenditure, but don't know if they can handle a digital interface that spins and smart features that decide when to turn heat or a/c on and off on their own, Honeywell Home is launching an approachable, easy to use and decipher smart thermostat, the Honeywell X2S, that resembles the familiar digital thermostat Gen Xers and Boomers have mounted in their hallways. We just checked it out at CES 2025 and we can't wait to test it out.
Meet the Honeywell Home X2S
Not sure how to use a smart thermostat? It doesn't matter. Honeywell's X2S deliberately resembles their familiar digital cousins, except with the smart features you’re craving. It works with most HVAC systems and internet routers, so this simple installation is the only home upgrade you’ll have to make.
The Honeywell Home X2S has an approachable, bright display that clearly shows the current and set-to temperatures. Simple push buttons make it easy to navigate the interface, whether you’re scheduling heating or cooling or exploring the menu.
Smart features
With Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home compatibility, you can say something like, “Hey Google, it’s cold in here—turn up the heat on my Honeywell Home.” Sure, it’ll take some getting used to, but it beats getting up off the couch and sauntering over to your old thermostat to change the temp manually.
The thermostat also has its own First Alert app that detects when you leave home, reducing your HVAC system’s energy consumption. The manufacturer suggests that with its recommended scheduling feature, you could save about 22% on heating and 17% on cooling.
While other smart thermostats will cost you a pretty penny, the Honeywell Home X2S will retail for $79.99 when it’s available in-store in March 2025.
