If light from outside prevents you from getting a good night’s rest, it’s time to do something about it. Blackout curtains offer one simple fix for unwanted sunlight in your bedroom.

Good blackout curtains, if installed properly, will block most sunlight and darken your sleeping quarters. The best blackout curtains can reduce noise from outside, and keep a room cooler during hot months and warmer during the winter, all while being stylish.

We tested popular curtain brands to find the best blackout curtains you can buy right now. After evaluating each blackout curtain based on its light-blocking abilities as well as its aesthetic characteristics, we determined that the very best blackout curtains are the Amazon Basics Room Darkening Blackout Curtains with Grommets (available at Amazon) . These polyester curtains outperformed every other product in our lab tests when it came to blocking light.

Along with a great mattress and quality sheets, room-darkening curtains can play an important part in getting a great night’s sleep. Our favorite blackout curtains also will help keep sunlight out of a room, whether you're sleeping, a baby is napping, or your loved ones are sitting back and relaxing for family movie night.

If you’re looking for total darkness, this Amazon Basics blackout curtain has your back. During our light tests, these blackout curtains performed the best, doing an excellent job of blocking out unwanted light.

These curtains may not look fancy, but they’re made of polyester with a thick light-blocking coating on the sunward side. Sold in packs of two panels, the curtains are available in nine different (fairly muted) colors to easily match your interior design, three hanging styles, and three lengths.

If your curtains arrive wrinkled, the company says a bit of ironing ought to fix it right up; they’re also perfectly safe to throw in the washing machine.

  • Blocks light well

Cons

  • Doesn't have luxurious look or feel

Sun Zero is a popular blackout curtain brand; you can shop for them at a variety of retailers. So we tested three sets of Sun Zeros—one from Amazon, one from Wayfair, and one from Macy’s.

Data from our testing shows that they all perform similarly. The Sun Zero blackout curtains do a good job blocking light, with the set sold on Amazon blocking the most.

All the Sun Zero blackout curtains are made of shiny polyester material that looks like it wants to be silk.

Pros

  • Blocks light pretty well

Cons

  • Silky fabric is shiny

Best Blackout Curtains for Nursery
Quinn 100% Blackout Insulated Curtain Panel
  • Material: 81% polyester, 19% rayon (100% polyester lining)
  • Dimensions: 50 x 63 inches, 50 x 84 inches, 50 x 95 inches, 50 x 108 inches
  • Hanging style: Grommet
  • Machine washable: Yes

The Quinn total blackout curtain has a nice balance of performance and aesthetics, which is why we think they’re the best blackout curtains for a baby’s nursery—gotta have cute things for the cutie who sleeps here!

Although the curtains are made of rayon and polyester, the woven exterior makes it appear similar to more expensive sets made of linen. The interior polyester lining of the Quinn curtain does a good job ensuring not a ray of light gets through even under the direct beam of a floodlight, which means even the brightest afternoon sun won’t wake your baby during naptime.

  • Blocks light

  • Looks good

  • Feels well-made

Cons

  • Material is on the flimsy side

  • Material: Polyester blend
  • Dimensions: From 34 x 48 inches to 70 x 108 inches
  • Hanging style: Back tab, rod pocket

Nicetown’s blackout curtains are solidly average at blocking light, and they are available in colors ranging from subdued neutrals to bright shades. Our staffers don’t like the look or feel of the shiny, polyester curtains, and noticed a crease in them after minimal usage.

If you have trouble finding room-darkening drapes that will fit your windows, the Nicetown curtains may be worth considering. They are available in several sizes—with options that will fit the needs of people who have narrow, wide, short, or tall windows.

Pros

  • Blocked decently

  • Available in multiple sizes

Cons

  • Shiny polyester material looks and feels bad

BGment Rod Pocket Blackout Curtains
  • Material: Polyester
  • Dimensions: From 29 x 36 inches to 70 x 63 inches
  • Hanging style: Rod pocket
  • Machine washable: Yes (gentle cycle in cold water)

The BGment Rod Pocket Blackout Curtains just didn’t shine. They were average at blocking light and not aesthetically pleasing. The polyester material on the curtains felt cheap and looked dull.

Like the Nicetown blackout curtains, the BGment is available in several sizes and colors. Unfortunately, they don’t perform as well. The Nicetown curtains are a little more expensive, but they’re a better investment if you need a darker room.

Emery Linen Blackout Curtain
  • Material: 73% linen, 27% cotton (polyester lining)
  • Dimensions: 50 x 84 inches, 50 x 96 inches, 50 x 108 inches, 100 x 84 inches, 100 x 96 inches, 100 x 108 inches
  • Hanging style: Rod pocket, back tabs, ring top
  • Machine washable: No (dry-clean only)

Pottery Barn’s Emery Linen Blackout Curtain was among the few blackout curtains we tested made from natural fibers. It’s also beautiful. We received the curtain in a soft gray color that we could picture rustling gently in the window of a peaceful beach house. Unfortunately, it didn’t do a great job blocking light. In both our visual and metered tests, the curtain let in significantly more light than our winner. Plus, this curtain is among the few that isn’t machine-washable.

If total darkness is a secondary issue and what you want are beautiful, high-quality window treatments, you can spring for Pottery Barn. But if you want the best room-darkening curtains or a lower-maintenance option, we advise going for the Amazon Basics blackout curtains.

Pros

  • Beautiful

  • Natural fibers

Cons

  • Mediocre light blocking

  • Not machine washable

How to Choose the Best Blackout Curtains

Blackout curtains are useful for sleep if you’re sensitive to light. They keep your room dark while being less personally intrusive than eye masks. Blackout curtains can also be used in your living room to create dark conditions for movie nights, home theaters, or to keep rooms dark if you want to avoid direct light on paintings or furniture.

Material

When shopping for the best blackout curtains, you will find that many are constructed with polyester. This fabric can be tightly woven so it does a good job of blocking the sun’s light. If you’re decorating a room where a little sunlight is welcome, you may want to consider linen, silk, velvet, and other natural fabrics that can offer some aesthetically pleasing alternatives.

Room-Darkening Abilities

Some brands claim their blackout curtains block out all the light, but they may be better described as room-darkening curtains. In addition to the fabric used in the curtains, the actual construction plays a role in its ability to darken a room. Some qualities you can look for are triple-weave construction, which uses a dark polyester thread in between other materials, or a backing sheeting made of polyester.

Size

Before shopping for blackout curtains, ensure you measure the length and width of your windows and select the right curtain size. To effectively block sunlight, blackout curtains need to extend past the edge of windows. All/most of our favorite blackout curtains are available in panels that are 52 inches wide, but some come in additional widths. As important as width is length, because you don’t want sunlight leaking in from the bottom of a blackout curtain. You could always choose a blackout curtain that extends to the floor, but if you like the look of a shorter curtain, some of our favorites are available in lengths as short as 36 inches.

Hanging Style

With some blackout curtains, you have options with the hanging style. Grommets, which offer a more modern look, are easy to hang, as they slide onto a curtain rod. Once they are installed, curtains with grommets are also easy to open and close. However, because the holes are larger than the curtain rod they are mounted on, this hanging style does have the potential to let in some light.

For a more traditional look, opt for blackout curtains that have rod pockets or back tabs. While not as easy to install as grommets, rod pockets and back tab curtains slide directly on a rod so there’s less chance of light. Once installed, they tend to be more difficult to open and close than blackout curtains with grommets.

Other hanging styles include ringtops, pinch pleats, and pencil-pleat. Each of these may require you to purchase hanging hardware beyond a curtain rod. Like rod pockets and back tabs, they tend to look more traditional than grommets.

Blackout Curtain FAQ

What Material Is Best for Blackout Curtains?

While blackout curtains are available in materials ranging from cotton to linen, our lab testing found that polyester curtains generally offer the best UV-blocking performance. However, you shouldn’t discount other materials. There are some situations where you wouldn’t want total darkness. For example, total darkness can be detrimental to keeping a baby’s normal sleep schedule.

Also, sleep experts recommend getting some sunlight in your system when you wake up because it starts your internal clock for the day and helps your body prepare you to get sleepy at night. Sleeping with blackout curtains is great, but sitting in a room with them all day can be bad for your sleep. (Another option would be getting a sunrise alarm clock, which would allow you to control when daylight begins, as opposed to relying on Mother Nature.)

What Color Is Best For Blackout Curtains?

Ideally, you will want the darkest, highest-quality polyester curtain you can find for maximum light deflection.

Do Blackout Curtains Keep Heat Out?

Blackout curtains tend to be thicker than regular curtains. Because of this, they can be an energy-efficient way to keep a room cool by deflecting heat, while also darkening it. Thermal blackout curtains can also help ward off cold temperatures.

How To Sleep Better: Sleeping Tips For A Restful Night

Sleep is a critical aspect of mental and physical health. Here are some ideas, if you’re looking for ways to improve your sleep hygiene.

  • Ensure your bedroom is a relaxing space that’s for sleep
  • Don’t watch TV or work in bed
  • Eliminate blue light exposure by not using devices in bed
  • Manage the ambient temperature of your bedroom
  • Keep your room dark and quiet

How We Test Blackout Curtains

We scrutinize each brand of blackout curtain based first and foremost on its ability to block light, but also on its appearance and fabric quality. We consider factors like color and size range, but these are less important than functionality and appearance.

We test every curtain with a Spectra Professional IV type A light meter. Our testers hang each curtain in a doorway and shine flood lights on it from one side, measuring the light that passes through. This test gives us objective numbers on light penetration.
