Past finalists have included everything from handheld washing machines to modular cooking appliances.
What’s interesting is that the competition doesn’t seem to have a bias toward either form or function; rather, entries must simply be innovative. The result is a highly esteemed design showcase that hosts some of the brightest young minds in the industry.
Last week, Electrolux revealed the 2013 competition’s 20 semifinalists. Some of the entries include stress-relieving “breathing" walls and robotic cleaning appliances. Most of them appear to focus on domestic life, as might be expected from a competition hosted by Sweden’s Electrolux.
But there's also a clear interest in air purification this year. “There are some common trends that this year’s concepts are tapping into to make cooking, cleaning and air cleaning more inspiring in the future,” said Thomas Johansson, Design Director and Head of Jury, in a statement. “In many of the concepts we can see that one important future aspiration is to make our homes healthier and to address personal needs.”
Check out the Design Labs website to see some of these ideas in detail (don't mind the fuzzy translations). You might even get some home-decorating ideas out of it.
