With Haier’s acquisition of GE Appliance and CES just wrapping up a week ago, it might seem like there’s been a lot of news about home appliances and smart home lately.

Well, get ready for more: Design and Construction Week is happening in Las Vegas, and Reviewed.com will be on-site with photos and hands-on impressions of the latest products and trends.

That starts with an explainer. Design and Construction Week is what marketers have branded two distinct trade shows that co-located to Las Vegas in 2014.

Combined, the two shows offer more than 1.2 million square feet of products and services.

The Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) has historically been where manufacturers of fixtures, faucets, and major appliances have debuted new products for the year ahead. The show took a hiatus during the housing crisis, but came back with a vengeance in 2014, with a renewed focus on green technology, universal design, and luxury products.

In 2014 we talked to the president of the National Kitchen & Bath Association about his hopes for Design and Construction Week.

The International Builders’ Show (IBS) is organized by the National Association of Home Builders, and includes many of the same sorts of exhibitors, including lighting, flooring, and cabinetry. Both the shows came together to form one mega-show a couple years ago.

Combined, the two shows offer more than 1.2 million square feet of products and services for contractors, designers, and homeowners alike.

At KBIS/IBS, we’ll be focusing mostly on what we do best: Telling you, the consumer, about the new home appliances and connected home products you should be looking out for in 2016—and the trends that are emerging for the near future.

{{amazon name="Samsung SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit", asin="B010NZV14U", align="right"}} After CES, it’ll be hard to top the connectivity trends we’ve seen emerge, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see home security and entertainment companies pitching their products with a bent on builders. In fact, selling contractors on building new “smart” homes may be the key to bringing the connected home into the mainstream.

For the kitchen and laundry room, expect big debuts from most of the major brands. Samsung and Whirlpool will sit this show out, but LG and Electrolux/Frigidaire will be there, along with BSH—whose Thermador brand is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
