When it comes to staying hydrated, easily one of the most iconic, most recognizable accessories is the Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate 40 oz. Tumbler (available at Amazon) . As one of the best travel mugs, this trendy 40 oz. tumbler is made from BPA-free stainless steel and is vacuum-insulated for optimal temperature regulation. It’s sold in almost every color of the rainbow, making it not only a hydration tool but a fashion statement, too.

As someone who loves style and staying hydrated, I’ve filled my cabinet with three Stanley tumblers (plus one of the OG Stanley Quencher silhouettes). However, with so many tumbler options out there now, like one of my favorites, the OXO Strive XL Tumbler, is Stanley’s really as good as people say? Here’s what I think of this cult-favorite cup.

What we like

Stanley tumblers are sold in a bunch of fun colors—with new launches every season

You'll have a cold drink for hours.

As mentioned, the Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate Tumbler is sold in dozens of colors. In addition to the vibrant and neutral shades on-site, the brand also engages in special collaborations with popular retailers like Target and Starbucks.

Earlier this year, a Target Valentine’s Day launch led to actual fistfights among folks trying to score the coveted drinking vessel. So, if you ever had any doubt how popular these tumblers are, now you know.

It keeps water cold for hours on end

Beyond aesthetics, the Stanley 40 oz. tumbler is incredibly functional. During our travel mug testing, we found that it was the only tumbler that kept ice cubes from melting hours after the test began.

In my own experience, I find that the Flowstate works exceptionally well all day but especially at night. I like to fill mine up with water and ice and leave it bedside for midnight and early morning sips.

Every time, I’m met with icy goodness, even eight to 10 hours post-fill. It’s pretty remarkable.

The handle is ergonomic

The biggest change from the OG Stanley Quencher Flowstate to the H2.0 version was the updated handle and lid. The handle stands out to me. It now has little silicone grips for easier, more comfortable handling. It’s a small detail that makes for a notable upgrade.

That said, I still prefer the Hydro Flask All Around Travel Tumbler handle best of all, as it’s curved and fits even better in a gripped hand.

What we don’t like

The Stanley tumbler is not the easiest to clean

The lid consists of many individual parts.

Where many other travel tumblers feature single-piece lids, the Stanley tumbler lid comes apart. It has a rotating nozzle to transition the lid from sipping to straw mode—it has to be removed for a full deep clean.

That’s not all, though. That little nozzle has a silicone inlay to match the handle, which also needs to be removed and cleaned. Otherwise, you run the risk of bacteria build-up and mold formation.

This 40 oz. tumbler leaks

While the updated Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate Tumbler is designed to be more leaf-resistant, it’s by no means leakproof. Like with most tumblers, if it tips over, you can expect water to pour out of the straw, as well as the straw opening.

If you don’t plan on tossing it in your bag or on the car floor, though, this shouldn’t be much of a deterrent.

Should you buy a 40 oz. Stanley Tumbler?

Yes, it’s colorful and functional

The Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate Tumbler is the tumbler that started the craze. It’s a classic handheld water bottle sold in dozens of colors, all of which are emblazoned with the brand’s now-iconic logo. For these reasons, it's one of the best travel tumblers we've tested.

All this to say: If you want to lean into the aesthetics of the trend, Stanley is definitely the way to go. That said, if an easy-to-clean, leak-proof design is your top priority, you may want to keep shopping for something that's less prone to leaking like the OXO Strive XL Tumbler.
