Editor's note (November 2024): We no longer recommend consumers purchase Govee Life and Govee Smart electric space heaters, specifically this model the H7130 as well as H7131, H7132, H7133, H7134, and H7135, which have been recalled due to overheating and safety risks. Owners can contact the manufacturer at 833-772-5360 for a refund.
Oil prices are sky-high right now, and thanks to our large home and the frigid New England winter weather, my partner and I are currently saddled with offensively-high heating bills.
To keep costs to a manageable level, we don’t put our thermostats higher than 65°F, and at night, I usually turn them down to 60°F. Personally, I don’t mind the cold—all the better for curling up under a pile of blankets, if you ask me—but my partner regularly laments the chilly temperature, especially when he stays up at night to play video games.
To prove I’m not a total grinch and help him stay warm in his “man cave,” I set him up with the Govee Space Heater. Govee is mostly known for its various smart LED lights, but is slowly expanding to other devices in the smart home space.
We wanted to see how the Wi-Fi space heater performed, so we put it to the test over the course of several weeks—here’s what we found.
What we like
The Govee space heater is toasty warm
The first time I walked into the man cave with the Govee Space Heater running, I was shocked at how warm it was. The room is around 150 square feet, and the small heater was able to easily keep the whole room at 70°F. (The brand recommends the heater for rooms up to 270 square feet, so it could likely handle a larger space, too.)
When you turn it on, the heater warms up quickly, putting off heat in a matter of seconds, and the oscillation feature pushes warmth all across the whole space. It has low, medium, and high fan settings to choose from, but it is a bit loud when it’s on high.
Despite being quite the little powerhouse, the Govee Heater doesn’t get too hot to the touch—ideal since we have several curious pets. It also offers tip-over and overheating safety features and will automatically shut down if it ever falls over.
The Govee heater has a built-in thermostat
In my humble opinion, one of the best things about this space heater is that it has a built-in thermostat that can automatically turn the heat on and off as needed.
With other heaters I’ve used in the past, they run constantly until you shut them off. The Govee app, on the other hand, allows you to set the space heater to a specific temperature between 68°F and 77°F.
It monitors the temperature of the room, automatically shutting off if it gets warmer than your set temperature. If the space drops more than four degrees below your target temperature, the space heater will turn back on again.
Not only does this help keep the room at a fairly stable temperature, but it also uses less energy than a regular space heater, as it’s only running when needed.
This smart electric space heater works with Alexa
We have several Amazon Echo devices throughout our house, and it’s always convenient when you can control a smart device with voice commands.
The Govee Heater can be synced up to Alexa, and we were able to use voice commands to turn it on and off, as well as to set our desired temperature.
It was really convenient for those times I forgot my phone in another room or just wanted to make sure the device was off before we went to bed.
The only caveat here is that Govee recommends simply naming the device “heater”—as opposed to, say “office heater”—to keep things easy for Alexa to understand.
This could get a little dicey if you have multiple heaters located throughout your home.
You can pair it with other accessories
If you want to make the Govee Space Heater even smarter, the brand offers a couple other accessories that it can be paired with. You can pair the space heater with the Govee Wi-Fi Thermometer Hygrometer, which monitors the temperature in another area of the room, letting the space heater know when it needs to kick on. This would be particularly useful if you were heating a large space.
It can also be used alongside the Govee Smart Air Quality Monitor. Through the Govee app, you can set up a variety of automations between the two devices, such as turning the space heater on if the monitor senses the temperature is too low or turning the heater off if the air quality reaches a certain level.
It’s definitely a handy feature if you have more than one Govee smart device.
What we don’t like
The controls on the Govee Space Heater can be confusing
The buttons on the device aren't the most self-explanatory.
Truly, we couldn’t find much that we didn’t like about the Govee Space Heater. One of my only complaints is that the physical buttons on the unit aren’t clearly labeled. They have little icons, but even after a few weeks of use, I’m not 100% sure what some of the buttons do.
This became a problem one night when I pressed the power button to turn the machine off, only to walk by in the morning and see the heater was still running. (Obviously not ideal in terms of safety!) It turns out that I had only put it on low—not shut the heater off completely.
From then on, we stuck to using the app or Alexa to control the heater, which worked fine, but I do think the buttons should be labeled better or at least more intuitive.
Should you buy the Govee Space Heater?
Yes, definitely—it’s perfect for wintertime.
Your pup will be very grateful!
If you’re looking for a way to keep one room toasty warm without racking up major heating bills, the Govee Space Heater will certainly get the job done. First and foremost, it boasts powerful heating abilities, warming up quickly and pushing heat across the whole room thanks to its oscillation abilities. We also love its thermostat feature and easy-to-use app controls.
The Govee unit retails for around $80, which is about average for a space heater of this size, and if we had the choice between a regular model and this sleek smart model, the choice is fairly obvious in our book.
