Looking to remove hard-to-clean stains off your floors? Or to detail your car yourself? Maybe you’ve got some nasty gunk accumulating on the tile in your bathroom. With the best steam cleaners, you can clean just about any surface in your home or vehicle with nothing but heat, water, and patience.
We love steam cleaners for their versatility—these cleaning beasts often come with attachments. The best steam cleaners can tackle the biggest outside cleaning challenges, from grills to car engines. A great steam cleaner is just as useful inside homes for cleaning grout, upholstery, and sticky messes on countertops and other solid surfaces. Best of all, these cleaning machines don’t require chemicals to remove grime, relying instead on the power of water heated into steam.
When testing and evaluating top-rated steam cleaners, we paid particular attention to water tank capacity, cord length, and weight, but there are other things to consider. Waiting for a steam cleaner to heat up can be a drag, but the steamers we recommend all heat up quickly, with the steam mop we picked only taking a minute to reach cleaning power. When shopping for steam cleaners, we also recommend looking for one that has plenty of attachments for different cleaning tasks.
Our best overall pick is the McCulloch MC1375
(available at Amazon for $179.99)
, a heavy-duty cleaner that holds enough water for 90 minutes of continuous steam cleaning. This steam cleaner offers exceptional cleaning power and can tackle just about anything. However, it’s not the only quality steam cleaner we’ve found. Here are some of the best steam cleaners on the market.
Best Overall
McCulloch MC1375
Weight: 13 pounds
Water tank capacity: 48 ounces
Power cord length: 18 feet
The McCulloch MC1375 is a great all-around heavy-duty canister steam cleaner. It comes with assorted attachments, including metal and nylon brushes in different shapes and sizes, a scraper for baked-on food, and a large mop head to clean floors.
When we tested this McCulloch steam cleaner, it exceeded our expectations. It’s able to handle all sorts of incredibly tricky jobs. It magically dissolved grime from the grates of a grill and even cleaned stuck-on adhesive residue on vinyl tile.
Our cleaning tests found it takes 5 to 10 minutes for this steam cleaner to warm up. After it’s ready, you can clean up to 90 minutes at a time. The power cord length reaches up to 18 feet, and it has a 7-foot steam hose for hard-to-reach areas. We also like that it has a variable steam control knob.
The MC1375 isn’t a perfect cleaning machine. During our tests, the trigger stuck in the on position, which can be dangerous since you’re cleaning with steam. Also, you’ll need to empty the tank after cleaning, which is a bit annoying.
Overall, though, the McCulloch steam cleaner impressed our tester from start to finish—Amazon reviewers feel the same, giving it over 25,000 5-star ratings. Most user reviews praise how efficiently it cleans, whereas more negative ones mention broken parts having to be replaced. It offers chemical-free cleaning in a 13-pound package, and can handle most surfaces and flooring types in your home, garage, or vehicle.
Water tank capacity: 15.2 ounces (8.5-ounce recommended fill level)
Power cord length: 16.4 feet
While the viral Bissell Steam Shot Deluxe lives up to its hype, it’s hard to find online. We think people looking for an alternative will be happy with the Kiato Handheld Steam Cleaner. Like the Steam Shot, it comes with an extensive set of attachments, including two round brush heads, a window squeegee, and a clothing steamer.
With this handheld steam cleaner, you can tackle tile, grout, windows, upholstery, and more. Its size makes it easier to use in vehicles than larger, cumbersome upright steam cleaners. It’s easy to use too—fill it up and plug it in. It’s designed to be ready in under three minutes, and it has a button at the top of the handle to release steam for cleaning.
The main downsides to this cleaner are that the attachment heads are rather small and the tank is small in comparison to heavy-duty cleaners. While the brushes are still effective, it just means it takes more time to clean surface areas—and cleaning time is limited by the water tank capacity. Otherwise, we think this is a quality handheld steam cleaner that tackles grime with ease.
If floors are your biggest cleaning concern, then you may want to consider the PurSteam 10-in-1 steam mop. From the maker of our favorite steam iron, this steam mop can be removed from its cradle to be used as a handheld steam cleaner.
Like other steam cleaners we evaluated, it comes with multiple attachments, including three brushes, a steamer for upholstery and clothes, a scraping tool, a window squeegee, and a carpet glider. One of our favorite steam mops, the PurSteam’s mop head swivels for easier cleaning around furniture. It also has a long power cord, so you can reach messes whether you’re in mop mode or using it as a handheld steam cleaner. Its tank is smaller than other cleaners we evaluated, but it still runs for about 20 to 25 minutes at a time.
The PurSteam, which has 30,000-plus 5-star Amazon ratings, is a simple, chemical-free cleaner at an attractive price point. Users love the grout tool to deep clean tile grout, as well as the handheld steamer mode, and overall ease of use.
Pros
Cleans hardwood, tile, and glass, and refreshes carpet
The Wagner Spraytech 905e steam cleaner is specifically designed to clean automobiles, with attachments that will help you keep your vehicle like-new without harsh chemicals. We especially like the crevice tool, which is designed to reach tight spaces in between car seats, and the nylon brushes for cup holders and door pockets and wire brushes that can be used under the hood.
Those aren’t the only useful attachments, though. The angled jet nozzle will blast away grime from your hubcaps—and it’s also great for bathroom fixtures and other hard-to-reach areas. The 905e also comes with a microfiber bonnet that attaches to a steamer attachment. If you have children, you’ll love how this dynamic duo cleans car seats and seatbelts. With the squeegee that attaches to the steamer, you’ll be able to easily wipe away bugs from windshields and soap scum from shower doors, and clean other glass surfaces. (Take care when cleaning glass, because the steam can cause it to crack if the glass is too cold.)
This Wagner steam cleaner’s 40-ounce tank delivers up to 45 minutes per cleaning session. When you’re done cleaning, allow the Wagner to cool completely, which can take more than 30 minutes, and drain the tank. Wagner says the unit should never be stored with water in the tank. One other drawback is the length of the power cord. Even with an 8-foot steam hose, the 6-foot power cord limits this steam cleaner’s portability. It can be used with an extension cord, but a longer power cord would be an improvement.
Overall, though, the 905e is an eminently affordable steam cleaner that’s a big hit with online shoppers. It has everything you need to keep your vehicle’s interior clean, and reviewers say it’s great for detailing cars. In rare cases, users have reported ruptures or broken attachments.
The Dupray Neat steam cleaner has a 54-ounce water tank and delivers up to 50 minutes of continuous steam, which makes it a superb choice for detailing tile and grout.
Like other steam cleaners we have evaluated, the Dupray Neat comes with many attachments, including wire and nylon brushes, a mop head, and a squeegee. However, the Dupray also has a triangular tool that will help you clean corners.
Another thing that we love is that you can use regular towels and cloths with the mop head, in addition to the included microfiber pads and cloth. While it’s recommended that you use distilled water to extend the life of this steam cleaner, Dupray does say tap water is acceptable, unlike some others we evaluated.
The Neat has a 16-foot power cord, a convenient handle, and wheels to move it along the floor, making it portable. It also has two 3-foot extension tubes and a long steam hose to help clean hard-to-reach areas.
It comes with a two-year limited warranty and lifetime guarantee on the boiler, so you can rest assured that the company stands behind this steam cleaner. From its reviews on Amazon—4.5 stars, with more than 20,000 ratings—it seems like people who have bought it agree.
There are three types of steam cleaners—canister-style cleaners, handheld steam cleaners, and steam mops. Each has pros and cons.
Canister steam cleaners are bigger than handheld steam cleaners and steam mops, and they often can tackle tougher cleaning jobs. Because they are bigger, they tend to be less portable. When shopping for a canister steam cleaner, ensure it has wheels to help it move. They usually come with a large assortment of attachments.
Handheld steam cleaners are meant to be carried, so they are more portable and can reach hard-to-clean areas. They tend to have smaller tanks than canister steam cleaners, but the water capacity is often more than what you would find in steam mops. Like canister steamers, they usually come with a lot of tools.
Steam mops are designed to clean floors, but sometimes include attachments to increase their versatility. In general, they don’t take long to heat up water to steam, but the tank capacity is typically lower than canister steam cleaners and handheld steam cleaners. Some of our favorite steam mops transform into handheld steamers.
Where Does The Dirt Go When You Steam Clean?
Steam cleaners use heated water to loosen dirt and grime. Unlike carpet cleaners, steam cleaners do not suction away water and dirt. Instead, steam cleaners hydrate messes, so the dirt doesn’t “go” anywhere unless you’re using an attachment that’s fitted with a microfiber cloth. In that case, the dirty liquid is absorbed into the cloth. When you’re using a steam cleaner without a microfiber attachment, you’ll want to use a separate microfiber cloth to wipe away messes.
Where Should You Not Use A Steam Cleaner?
Because steam cleaners use really hot water, you have to take some precautions. Steam cleaners can damage some vinyl. With waxed floors, they can diminish the sheen. Also, you shouldn’t use them on hardwood floors that are not sealed. When in doubt, refer to the owner’s manual. To be safe, you can test clean a small area to ensure there is no damage.
Are Steam Cleaners Worth It?
Yes. Steam cleaners are versatile and, if used regularly, are a great way to clean your home. They also can handle bigger jobs that may cause other cleaning tools to struggle.
