  • Material: Cedar wood
  • Color: Natural
  • Style: Classic

This garden bed was easily the top choice when we did our research, but it blew away our expectations when delivered. Available for less than $100, this bed holds five cubic feet of dirt and plants, with a deep enough bed to allow for planting root vegetables and just about anything else.

Built with Chinese Fir that is water-resistant and looks spectacular and clean, this bed is easy to assemble, in just 30 minutes, and comes with a water-resistant liner and drainage holes for excess water on the bottom. Once built, it was sturdy enough to hold my entire weight, and even five cubic feet of wet soil didn’t cause any issues—but it’s light enough when empty to be able to build it and move it right where you need it before planting. This elevated garden bed is also 30 inches tall, which can help reduce back and knee strain. I’d highly recommend it to anyone as their first choice.

  • Material: Alloy steel, metal
  • Color: Silver
  • Style: Modern

This galvanized steel raised bed is perfect for vegetables or other plants, with sturdy materials that will hold up for years. Reviews are exceptionally strong from thousands of users. Unlike some other raised garden beds that sit on the ground, it still provides a foot of depth and a 32-square-foot area, giving you a large volume of growing space.

Like other ground gardens, there are benefits and drawbacks. The main benefit is you can plant just about anything you want, even if it needs more than a foot of depth because it can grow downward. Raised beds that sit on the ground also don’t need to worry about drainage, though wooden ones aren’t necessarily rot resistant since they’re directly on the ground—which luckily isn’t a concern with these steel-planter-box gardens. It’s also much cheaper than wooden beds of this size, dropping to around $50 on sale, though you’ll still need to purchase the soil.

Pros

  • Large growing space

  • Sturdy

  • Easy to assemble

Cons

  • More prone to rotting

Gardener’s Supply Company Raised Garden Bed Heavy Duty Cedar
  • Material: Cedar wood
  • Color: Tan

While most affordable raised beds use fir or some other water-resistant, lightweight wood, cedar is still the gold standard for wooden things you’ll leave outside in the elements. This heavy-duty, cedar raised bed is more expensive, but gives you a whopping 13 cubic feet of growing space sitting on four sturdy legs and corners.

If you want a gorgeous, high-quality raised bed that’s lifted off the ground to make it easier to garden without bending over, this is an ideal choice that should hold up for years to come if you take care of it.

Pros

  • Large growing space

  • Heavy duty

  • Lifted off the ground

Cons

  • Expensive

  • Material: Stainless steel, alloy steel
  • Color: Black
  • Style: Garden

If you’re more the DIY type, or you have a unique shape on your patio or yard you’re trying to make work, these nine-inch-high brackets provide endless customization. The four steel corners come with pre-drilled holes and screws, so all you need to do is provide appropriate wooden frames and you can build whatever bed size you want in minutes.

Just note that this is only useful for building raised beds that will sit on the ground, so when picking an appropriate wood to pair with these, you’ll need to find proper cedar, fir, or hemlock to pair. Some guides will also recommend types of pine, but in my experience, it’s guaranteed to rot, and pressure-treated, stained, or painted wood could leach chemicals into your garden bed.

Pros

  • Customizable

  • Quick to build

  • Holes and screws are pre drilled

Cons

Keter Urban Bloomer 12.7 Gallon Raised Garden Bed
  • Material: Resin
  • Color: Dark gray
  • Style: Modern

If you’re in need of a beginner-friendly, easy-to-set-up raised garden bed, then the Keter Urban Bloomer is a solid pick. It’s compact size makes it ideal for small spaces in your backyard. Its water gauge is easy to read and signals when your plants need to be watered. In addition, this bed includes a drainage system that can fully be controlled and a water system with a reservoir that prevents rot decay caused by overwatering your plants. It’s a bit expensive, so choosing this bed will depend on your budget.

  • Great for beginners

  • Easy to put together

  • Small-space friendly
