Amazon is a fine place for buying plenty of things, from marked-down appliances to everyday staples like cleaning supplies, or even groceries. Some Amazon services are greater than others—Prime Video, for example, continues to impress us with the robustness of its offerings, and adds a lot of value overall to a Prime membership.

There are, however, many experiences Amazon cannot replicate, despite seeming to position itself as a consummate online (and sometimes offline) retailer. One arena we’ve been asked about before, and decided to dig a little deeper on, is Amazon’s sex toys.

What should you keep in mind while shopping for sex toys?

Sex toys are inextricably tied to your physical health and well-being, which means that the criteria by which you should vet products should reflect a level of caution. The current state of the sex toy marketplace is fairly unregulated, with ISO (International Standard for Organization) regulations having only locked into place in 2021.

As a baseline, you’ll want to know that your toys are made with body-safe materials, like FDA-grade, 100% platinum-grade silicone, or phthalate-free materials. You’ll want to ensure your toys come with detailed instructions, especially if any penetration or insertion is involved. You should also look for toys that are recommended, either by reviewers or by sexual wellness professionals.

If you’re shopping for sex toys on Amazon, you’ll want to keep those criteria in mind, as well as an eye out for which brands you’re buying from—you wouldn’t, one hopes, buy condoms from Amazon that were listed without a recognizable, reputable brand, like Trojan, attached.

What sex toys does Amazon offer?

Amazon offers sex toys in a similar array and volume to most other products. That is to say, there are many options, some of which come from recognizable brands, while others do not. The best-seller list for sex toys has some options from brands reviewers love, like EINSEO, Magic Wand, Tracy’s Dog, and more. There are also toys from brands that are harder to vet, like Diamimio, which seems to be sold only on Amazon (and through similar third-party retailers, like Temu).

The best-seller page features a lot of toys that don’t have too many user reviews, which makes it difficult to evaluate why they’re best-selling. There are a few gems—we tried and loved the PlusOne Vibrating Bullet, which appears close to the top of the page.

Shopping for sex toys on Amazon is not what one would describe as an empowering experience. The images displayed under the best-selling options (which, notably, do not feature a high volume of reviews) are, frankly, a little depressing—the first product that comes up when you put “sex toys” into the search bar is a photorealistic, thrusting suction cup dildo that’s less than aesthetically pleasing.

Popping over to Amazon for your hunt for sex toys also has potential privacy risks. If you share your account with family, for example, you’ll risk them getting a glimpse into your private life if you buy from Amazon.

If you have popular brands you like, like Satisfyer or Womanizer, you can find those at Amazon. If you have an item in mind that you prefer, like the Womanizer Premium Eco toy, you can usually find them at lower prices than you might at sex toy retailers like Lovehoney or Bellesa.

So, should you shop for sex toys at Amazon?

Credit: Reviewed / Amazon

As we mentioned before, there are some services that Amazon provides that we wholeheartedly recommend—it’s harder, however, to vet the trustworthiness of the vendors that the retailer uses for sex toys. If you’re on the hunt for sex toys from reputable brands like Magic Wand, you can find those at Amazon. User reviews for the classic Magic Wand toy indicate that folks were overall happy with their purchases. Similarly, if you look through reviews, you can find solid options on the best-seller page, like the Mooligirl Rose vibrator, which has appeared on Playboy, and more.

As for the should of it all, while you can shop for sex toys on Amazon, there are certainly other retailers that we would recommend instead, not only for the quality of the toys they offer but also for the care and amenities that you won’t find when you shop with Amazon.

Where else would we recommend you shop for sex toys?

We have a few sex toy brands we’ve tested and loved. If you’re on the hunt for vibrators, for example, we’d put forward Womanizer, or Dame, or smaller brands like Maude and Cute Little Fuckers—all brands that are well-reviewed, and reputable. Maude is home to our favorite bullet vibrator, while Dame’s Arc vibrator took our top spot in the best G-spot vibrator. If you’re searching for a cheap, fun vibrator that you could reasonably leave out on a bedside table without anyone blinking, Emojibator’s Cherry toy is a great choice.

One great thing about shopping from brands that specialize in sex toys and sexual wellness products is that there’s a level of care infused into all the little details. Many sex toy retailers will take care to package toys discreetly, so you won’t be staring at a picture of a dildo when you open the box. Similarly, a lot of sex toy shops offer freebies, like lube or condoms sent along with your purchase.

Bigger sex toy shops like Lovehoney and Babeland are great not only at providing a wide range of sex toys, they also have published pieces by experts that inform users on how to engage with new kinds of sex toys, sexual play, and more.
