Protein powders are a mega-popular supplement in the fitness world, as they allow you to obtain additional grams to help you reach your muscle-building or weight-loss goals. Thanks to busy workdays and errands that you need to run, getting enough protein throughout your day can be difficult, so it’s nice to put together a quick smoothie or shake to get your protein fix with every meal.

We tested 11 different powders and after looking at the protein grams per serving, the ingredient lists, amino acid profiles, and then overall taste and consistency, we think the best protein powder is Gold Standard Whey (available at Amazon) thanks to its tasty flavor, smooth texture, and outstanding nutritional profile.

Without further ado, let’s get pumped up on some protein.

This powder earns top marks for its versatility in flavor and application.

Best Overall
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey

The name could be a simple coincidence, but Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard is one of the best all-around protein powders on the market.

For starters, it comes in a whopping 20 flavors, including Vanilla Ice Cream, Cinnamon Roll, and Strawberry Banana. This variety makes it one of the more versatile powders and almost guarantees you’ll find a flavor that suits your palate. A huge value add is the ease at which Gold Standard blends into almond milk and any smoothie recipe you prefer.

But flavor isn’t everything; it’s what’s inside that counts. Gold Standard comes with a 24-gram protein blend of whey isolate, concentrate, and peptides, which work together to promote lean muscle mass when supported by 5 grams of BCAAs. This provides versatility for daily use, as it can work well as a pre- or post-workout drink, a meal supplement, or a protein-packed snack on off days.

Pros

  • Wide range of flavors

  • Mixes easily

  • Versatile

Cons

  • Pricey

Best Value
Dymatize ISO100 Hydrolyzed

Next is our pick for the best-value protein powder, the Dymatize ISO100. It’s another excellent supplement to try when looking to add to or replace your meals without missing out on any vital protein consumption. As a bonus it’s offered at a lower price than Gold Standard.

According to the brand, Dymatise ISO100 contains 100% hydrolyzed whey protein isolate, which breaks down into simpler amino acids when combined with water, allowing for better digestion and absorption. Every serving is packed with 25 grams of protein, 5.5 grams of BCAAs, and 2.6 grams of Leucine, which provides your body with the energy it needs to recover actively during a workout.

While the Dymatize's ingredient list is impressive, the flavor when blending it with my usual smoothie recipe really stood out for me. Dymatize mixed incredibly well with the ingredients, and the vanilla flavor wasn’t too in-your-face, which makes it enjoyable when you come home and need to replenish after a workout or to stay full throughout the day and curb any unhealthy snacking.

Pros

  • Tastes great

  • Mixes well

  • Inexpensive

Cons

  • More carbs than some powders

This lactose-free blend doesn't skimp on taste.

Best Alternative Diet
Sunwarrior Protein Warrior Blend

Adhering to a dairy-free diet shouldn’t hinder your protein intake. Fortunately, Sunwarrior Vegan Protein Powder is one of our favorites and is lactose-free. I was pleasantly surprised at how good this protein tasted. Plant proteins can be chalkier, and there are usually fewer additives, but despite this, the Sunwarrior powder still blended well and had a nice flavor profile.

I immediately noticed how keto-friendly Sunwarrior’s ingredient list is. It’s soy, dairy, and gluten-free, and the brand lists a full breakdown of the amino acids in every scoop.

Pairing plant protein with just almond milk can be a pretty unpleasant experience. However, Sunwarrior was almost as smooth and tasty as our favorite whey protein powders. It’s a standout when creating quick and easy shakes with the powder and your favorite liquid, whether water or almond milk.

Pros

  • Great taste

  • Good texture

  • Keto friendly

Cons

  • Not as smooth as whey powders

Vital Performance hits all the senses just right.

Best Texture
Vital Proteins Vital Performance Protein

Let’s be honest: Protein powder can have a less-than-appealing smell inside the container. However, Vital Performance Protein Powder is an exception to the rule, as this powder's smell, taste, and texture was virtually unmatched during my testing experience.

With 5 grams of BCAAs and 9 grams of EAAs, this powder is already teeming with essential nutrients to support body health and composition. But what really stands out is the additional 10 grams of collagen peptides in every serving. Sourced from bovine hide, you get the added boost of bone, joint, and tendon support, which is crucial during the recovery period after a workout.

As previously mentioned, the taste and texture of this powder once it was mixed into almond milk or blended into a smoothie was amazing. This provides a huge benefit on those off-days when you want to up your protein intake but don’t want to feel like you have to pinch your nose and chug down a chalky, unpleasant shake.

Pros

  • Exceptional taste

  • Good texture

Cons

  • Pricey

Ghost has found its niche in a crowded market with its unique, delicious flavors.

Best Flavor
Ghost Whey Protein

Ghost Whey Protein is an up-and-comer in the protein and workout supplement space. It is known for creating trendy and intriguing flavors like Apple Cider Doughnut and Cereal Milk. The fun, unique flavors make Ghost stand out from other protein powders on the shelves, and the smooth texture makes it more than just a funky flavor.

There are 25 grams of whey protein per serving, and every scoop is soy- and gluten-free, which is ideal when you have any aversions to either additive, as they’re found in a fair amount of powders. It’s perfect for any time of day or use—pre- or post-workout or a meal replacement in the morning, afternoon, or night.

The flavor was king for Ghost. The smoothie and the almond milk mix are not often equally delicious, but I enjoyed both variations immensely. Not to mention, the powder blends quickly and easily in a blender or standard shaker bottle.

Pros

  • Unique flavors

  • Soy and gluten free

  • Mixes well

Cons

  • Expensive

Other Protein Powders we tested

Product image of Nutricost Casein Protein
Nutricost Casein Protein

The Nutricost Casein Protein had a lot going for it—excellent protein per serving at 25 grams mixed with substantial value on cost—in addition to no unnecessary additives like coconut flour or cellulose. The powder itself smelled great and mixed extremely well with just almond milk.

However, the Nutricost Casein Protein didn’t hold up well when blended into a smoothie. The texture was extremely thick, and the vanilla flavor overpowered the rest of the ingredients. Lastly, the added sugars detract from the potential of this protein when compared with the rest of the crop.

Product image of Vega Protein and Greens
Vega Protein and Greens

Unlike most protein shake brands, Vega Protein and Greens does not contain thickening agents like xanthan gum or arrowroot powder. It also contains no added sugars that offset the value of plant-based proteins. The final result has a cleaner texture that doesn't seek to replicate a traditional milkshake.

While this approach does have its appeal, it was difficult to look past the underwhelming mixability of the Vega powder. It took an additional 1 to 2 ounces of almond milk to provide an ideal consistency for putting this down after a workout. It’s tough to beat the cost ($28 for 20 servings), but it ranked well below the Sunwarrior in terms of taste and ease of use.

Product image of Garden of Life Sport Organic Plant-Based Protein
Garden of Life Sport Organic Plant-Based Protein

As mentioned above, plant-based powders can be an acquired taste in terms of flavor and consistency. Still, they provide a valuable alternative when your diet calls for specific ingredient inclusions (and exclusions).

The Garden of Life SPORT Organic Plant-Based Protein provides a detailed breakdown of protein amounts and amino acids, which is crucial when you want to know exactly what’s going into your body. However, as the most expensive powder in the batch ($48), the return on cost per gram of protein doesn’t make this a worthwhile investment when something like Sunwarrior is available.

Product image of Orgain Organic Protein
Orgain Organic Protein

It was a bit of a struggle to get the Orgain Organic Protein + Superfoods protein to mix well in either almond milk or the smoothie recipe, but once it did, the flavor was top-notch.

While the resulting shake tasted great, Orgain doesn’t much in the way of size and flavor options of Orgain, which can make this a limiting factor. And with 21 grams of protein per serving, you don’t get much bang for your buck at $26.

Product image of Purely Inspired Organic Protein
Purely Inspired Organic Protein

Overall, the Purely Inspired Organic Plant Protein had an average smell, flavor, and consistency when mixed with almond milk and into the smoothie. However, it has a decently high cost per serving at $1.42, which is disappointing given its affordable $17 price point.

If you’re looking for a relatively clean powder with no added sugars or fillers, Purely Inspired is an OK option, but you have better places to look for a healthy protein supplement.

Product image of Muscle Milk Pro Series Protein Powder Supplement
Muscle Milk Pro Series Protein Powder Supplement

Testing this brand was a bit of a throwback to early high school, when Muscle Milk was key to packing on weight during football season. It seems not much has changed over the years, as this powder was unenjoyable from top to bottom. The flavor and consistency were struggles to put down, even when mixed with a fruit-packed smoothie recipe.

Muscle milk has obvious fillers and added sugars, and the mix will leave your stomach feeling bloated and gassy after you finish. We recommend avoiding this powder and opting for any of our five top picks instead.

What you should know about protein powder

What is whey protein?

Whey protein is one of the most popular types of protein you can find on shelves. It’s high in essential amino acids and digests quickly, making it a great option for post-workout recovery. However, this protein is milk-based, so it isn’t suitable for vegans or anyone who’s lactose intolerant.

What are other types of protein?

Casein is another dairy-based protein, but it is slower to digest than whey. It might not be the best option for a quick protein hit after exercising, but it is a good option to keep you satiated between meals.

And for the dairy-avoidant, plant-based proteins are the way to go. Rice and pea proteins are common sources found in vegan protein powders. When finding a vegan protein powder, you’ll want to look for multiple protein sources to get a complete amino acid profile. Sunwarrior, for example, contains both pea and hemp protein.

When is the best time to take protein powder?

The short answer: Any time that fits in your schedule. While it’s often recommended to consume protein within 30 minutes of completing a workout to fuel your muscle recovery, recent research has shown that getting adequate protein throughout the day is more important for muscle growth and recovery than the timing of your consumption. Spreading your protein intake throughout the day may be more beneficial for muscle growth and make reaching your protein intake goal easier.

How we test protein powder

After researching the top protein powder brands, we selected eleven options to put head-to-head and evaluated their taste, texture, and smell.

The tests

To test, I drank all powders two ways: Once by mixing with 8 ounces of almond milk and again by blending into a smoothie. I used the same recipe every time: 1/3 cup blueberry, 1/3 cup kale, half of a banana, one tablespoon of peanut butter, one tablespoon of Greek yogurt, 6 to 8 ounces of almond milk, and—of course—the recommended daily serving of protein powder.

After both taste tests, I evaluated each brand in a spreadsheet. I also looked at the nutritional label to evaluate factors like grams of protein per serving, calories per serving, and other beneficial supplements included in the powder.

Finding the right protein for you is a challenge, as your body will react differently than the next person’s, so take your time to find the best balance of protein servings and active ingredients to support your health needs.
