I almost did it again… forgot to plan something special for my girlfriend on Valentine’s Day. She insists she doesn’t want a gift, but I have a feeling that’s because we’re trying to do a “low-buy year” and save as much money as possible. But she didn’t say I couldn’t do something thoughtful.
My Valentine’s Day gift options are super limited between my budget and delivery time, so I’m Googling cheap and quick ideas. But I don’t want to get her something she’ll only use once, and half of this stuff will never arrive on time. I scroll further and start thinking of an experience or something we could do together instead. Groupon deals suddenly catch my eye. Hmm, is this my answer?
If they can help me save on a romantic dinner, couples massage, or wine tasting, I could get my girl something thoughtful while sticking to our money-saving goals. I just hope these prices aren’t too good to be true…
Shopping for Valentine’s gifts

How I'm trying not to be this year.
I’m browsing Groupon’s Valentine’s Day tab, and there are so many choices. I think one of these could actually work for my girlfriend’s gift:
But hold on… how do I know if these deals are legit? Because saving almost 50% on a romantic experience sounds too good to be true.
It seems like I should read each deal’s reviews before buying anything to know if others had issues redeeming or had a bad experience—I don’t want to spoil Valentine’s Day!
Getting a deal on a romantic dinner

This is one of the options I'm considering for V-Day dinner.
Doing a low-buy year doesn’t mean I won’t spend money on my girlfriend—I’m just always looking for the best value. Like in this case, I’d rather spend cash on a romantic dinner we can share vs. flowers that die in a week.
There’s an amazing deal for an appetizer, two entrees, and two drinks at a place we’ve never tried. It’s valid on holidays, and we just have to show the voucher when we get there. Its Groupon reviews are great, so I feel confident about this deal being legit.
When checking out, there’s an option to print the voucher. I think I’ll put that in her card as a surprise since she’s not expecting a gift!
Groupon is also telling me I have three days to get a refund if she doesn’t like it, but I know she will. After paying with Apple Pay, I instantly get the voucher in my email inbox. I’m so happy this gift doesn’t need shipping.

More deals for our low-buy year

There are so many other deals, I hardly know where else to start.
This Groupon thing is genius—I’m already planning our next date night. Maybe we’ll finally try that ax-throwing place downtown or go bowling like we keep saying we will because we can do it all on our new budget.
Even vacation planning will be cheaper with Groupon. I’m already finding deals for nice hotels, resorts, and activities (seriously, we could go horseback riding), so maybe we can travel this year after all.
Thanks, Groupon. I’ll be back!

This'll be me and my girl on Valentine's Day.
I guess this is where I say thank you, Groupon. Not only did you save me from being that person who gives their girlfriend something basic on Valentine’s Day, but you helped me do something romantic without breaking my girlfriend and I’s money-saving goals.
Catch me checking for a Groupon deal before buying or booking, well, anything. Who knows, maybe I’ll be able to do more for less this year, just from browsing their website. Bring on the romance, adventure, and savings.
