About the Current Model G Dual Zone Grill

The Current Model G Electric grill rivals its gas counterparts in space and heat capacity.

The Current Model G Dual Zone Grill is a fully electric grill that plugs into a standard 110V outlet. The independent cooking zones are digitally controlled, and there’s an LCD display for each zone. While the grill heats, the display alternates between the desired temperature and the current temperature as it climbs.

The system also connects to an app that can be used to control the temperature zones, keep track of preheating, and set a timer or temperature probe alert.

This grill can reach a maximum temperature of 700°F. The dishwasher-safe grates are seasoned stainless steel, and the grill comes with two temperature probes and accessory trays that can used for steaming and smoking.

The Model G also comes with a limited 10-year warranty.

What we like about the Current Model G Electric Grill

The results rival that of a gas grill

Grill marks are abundant even though this grill lacks flames.

While you won’t get very many flames, the heat produced by the Current Model G is high enough to grill food just as you’re used to—grill marks and all.

The surface area is on par with our winning gas grill—enough room to fit food for a large gathering. We recently grilled 10 burgers and eight hot dogs simultaneously, and we were able to achieve consistent results.

The app is helpful and easy to use

The Current app makes it easy to set the temperature and keep tabs on cooking food, especially when using the probes.

We’ve come to expect smart features on a lot of appliances these days, and this grill delivers. The connected app is easy to use to set temperatures, monitor preheating, and check in on cooking progress when you’re using the included temperature probes.

You can adjust the temperature remotely, and set the desired temperature for each probe individually, which makes customizing what you’re cooking a cinch.

The surface heats relatively evenly and consistently

There's very little variation across the cooking surface.

Given the nature of electric elements, we weren't sure how evenly the Current grill would heat, so we were pleasantly surprised when our bread test showed little variation across the cooking surface.

The back left corner was marginally hotter than the rest of the grill, but not to a level that would cause concern. The temperature stays consistent over time and the heat is fairly evenly distributed across the entire surface.

You never have to worry about propane again

All you need is a standard 110V outlet, or extension cord, and this grill is up and running. The reliability can’t be beat since you never have to worry about running out of propane while grilling, or making a quick dash to Home Depot for a refill just before a big party.

There’s an AutoClean function

The removable, coated stainless-steel grates are meant to take on the patina of a grill, but the AutoClean function also makes them easy to scrape clean.

While this grill arrives looking sparkling with its light-colored grates, they won’t stay that way after a few rounds of grilling. The seasoning is meant to take on the patina of a traditional grill, but that doesn’t mean we want leftover bits of food to stick around.

The Current Model G features an AutoClean mode that you can run after you’re done grilling, and then a quick scrape will get rid of the charred bits.

The grates are also dishwasher-safe, although we don’t recommend putting them through a dishwasher cycle very often, since that could affect the coating and performance in the long term—and it still won’t return them to their original sparkle.

What we don’t like

It’s slow to preheat

In comparison to a gas grill, you’ll be waiting a bit longer for this grill to come up to temp. Once there, the temperatures stay steady, but we found the preheat time to be almost twice as long as a typical gas grill, depending on the temperature you want to cook at.

Assembly directions aren’t as helpful as we’d like

Current uses an app-based instruction system for assembling the grill, which we thought would be easier to follow than written instructions.

While construction is simple, some of the steps lack explanation and the animations aren’t as clear as they could be. We had to watch some of the steps several times to understand what was happening and replicate it with our grill.

Once you can decipher the directions, assembly goes quickly, especially with two people. It just might cause some frustration. We also recommend using a screwdriver with a very narrow handle because there’s not a lot of space for your hand when tightening some of the screws.

The cover is sold separately

The cover is made of luxurious-feeling water-resistant material.

The cover for this grill is a serious step up from most we’ve seen. It feels very premium, like a luxury raincoat, and the color is quite eye-catching. It’s also incredibly easy to slide over the grill and has a heft to it that keeps it securely in place.

Unfortunately, it’s sold separately, so you have to splurge to get the benefits of this premium cover. And we highly recommend investing in a cover since there are a lot of delicate electrical parts to protect on this grill.

Should you buy the Current Model G Electric Grill?

Yes! Especially if you want to ditch propane and still achieve grilling success

The Current Model G Electric Grill is the best electric grill we've used.

We used the Current Model G to cook lots of burgers, dogs, fish, and veggies for barbecues throughout the summer and found that it did an excellent job with everything we put on it.

The convenience of plugging it in rather than relying on a propane tank is unbeatable. We had to get used to the longer preheating time, but after a few grilling sessions, we adjusted to firing up the grill a bit earlier.

If you’re looking for a more sustainable and convenient grilling solution, we highly recommend the Current Model G. If you don’t have as much space and need a smaller electric grill, check out the Weber Lumin.
