Every year, thousands of new products are announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Truth be told, many of them never make it to Canada due to our small market size. The new gear that does make it here, however, is always worth getting excited about. Here’s a look at the top 10 gadgets that are actually expected to launch in Canada at some point this year!
1. TCL 8K Mini-LED TV
TCL's been a reliable brand known for its high-end but reasonably-priced televisions.
TCL has been making serious headway in Canada with their high quality, wallet-friendly flat screen TVs. Their latest panel is backlit with more than 25 thousand miniLED lights separated into more than 1000 control zones that can be turned off and on or dimmed individually. The result? Deeper blacks and less colour blooming where light colours bleed into darks. Samsung and LG also have Mini-LED TVs on the way in the new year so there will be plenty of options to choose from.
2. LG Instaview Refrigerator
Short of bringing you a sandwich, there's very little that this voice-enabled refrigerator can't do.
Are you ready to talk to your fridge? LG’s latest refrigerator will respond to simple voice commands such as opening up its doors, or checking how much ice is left in the freezer. All you have to do is ask. Another model in this lineup, the InstaView Door-in-Door Refrigerator (Side-by-Side) features built-in ultraviolet light that turns on once an hour to kill up to 99.9 percent of bacteria in the water dispenser tap. Both models feature the ability to see what’s inside by tapping on the glass door, which will change from opaque to transparent so you can see inside without letting the cold air out.
3. X-HMT Office Chair
The latest in home office comfort technology!
Working from home is about to get a lot more comfortable.For 2021, X-Chair announced it will be upgrading its office chairs to include both heat and massage. Four different massage modes are built into their new chairs and the company claims the added heat mode will increase blood flow, reduce stress and help relax tense muscles. The chairs feature 10 ergonomic features as well to help with proper sitting posture.
4. Nighthawk RAXE500 Router
The Nighthawk RAXE500 potentially offers blistering fast Wi-Fi speeds.
Really? Excitement over a router? Considering many of us are still working or attending school from home, this latest device could be a game-changer. This router is one of the first to feature Wi-Fi 6e. This new standard takes advantage of the 6 GHz band meaning your speeds in theory could reach a blazing 10.8 Gbps. Essentially it is like going from a 4 lane highway to a 16 lane freeway with much less congestion from other devices. Canada has yet to approve the use of Wifi 6e, but it is expected to pass shortly.
5. AirPop Active+ Face Mask
AirPop wants you to breathe easy with this new respirator mask.
There was no shortage of smart face masks and air purifiers on offer at this year’s CES, but this one stood out from the pack. The AirPop Active+ face mask includes a sensor that can not only track your breathing behaviour during the day and while working out, it can also determine what pollutants have been filtered out of the air. All information is then uploaded to a companion app for your viewing pleasure.
Then again, maybe it’s better if we don’t know what’s in the air we’re breathing. Ignorance is bliss.
6. LG Rollable Smartphone
Folding phones are old news. Rolling displays? That's where it's at.
Last year LG made waves after showing off a television with a rollable screen. This year the company promises to shrink down that technology so it can fit in your pocket. LG only gave us a quick glimpse at the LG Rollable. While we do know it can transform from a smartphone into a tablet-style device many other questions remained unanswered. However the company was adamant it would be available “early” this year.
7. Galaxy Upcycling at Home
Why let your old Samsung smartphones languish in a box when you can put them to work in your home?
How many smartphones do you have collecting dust in a drawer in your home? Samsung promises to breathe new life into old Galaxy smartphone with a software upgrade that will turn them into useful devices such as baby monitors or sensors to control smart lights in your home. The company hasn’t revealed all the details just yet, but Samsung promises a number of different solutions to help get more use out of your aging devices.
8. Infinity Game Table
It's time to bring board games into the modern age.
Family game night may never be the same again. The Infinity Board Game Table lets you play your favourite board games digitally! Arcade 1up has teamed up with Hasbro to bring many classics to the device including Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Candy Land, Scrabble, even digital puzzles. Not enough players? The table will connect to the Internet so you can play with family and friends no matter where they live. The HD touchscreen will come in two different sizes 24” (61 cm) or 32” (81 cm) and can run off battery power or can be plugged into an AC outlet. Both sizes feature tactile feedback to make the games feel more immersive. Sure, it may not have the same feel as a board game, but you will never have to worry about missing pieces, shuffling cards or cleaning up afterwards.
9. Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Sur Mesure
This device provides all of the shades of makeup you can dream up.
This could very well be the ultimate tool for beauty bloggers and fashionistas. This clever device lets users create custom shades of lipstick right at home. Hidden inside are three different colour pods of lipstick. Choose the shade you desire through a colour wheel on the smartphone app and watch as it squirts out droplets that you mix together for your ultimate shade. If that’s not enough, the Rouge Sur Mesure can take a photo of your favourite handbag, hat or pair of shoes and match their colour, within seconds.
10. Kohler Stillness Bath
No one needs a $13,000 bathtub. But we kind of want this $13,000 bathtub.
People are looking for more ways to relax at home and Kohler is betting you’ll shell out the cash for the privilege.
The Stillness Bath incorporates fog and aromatherapy to help bathers relax as they soak. Of course it’s voice activated. You just have to ask Amazon’s Alexa or Google Assistant to fill your tub with the right amount of water at the desired temperature. If you really want to splurge, you can upgrade to a model where the water flows over the edges into bamboo floor grates where it gets collected, reheated, and recirculated back into the tub.
This level of luxury doesn’t come cheap. Expect to pay around $13,000 when it becomes available, later this year.
