Jan. 24, 2008 – Pegged as the "world’s smallest 12x optical zoom digital camera," Fujifilm today announced the FinePix S1000*fd* compact digital camera. The 10-megapixel compact has the look and feel of a DSLR, with a thick handgrip and protruding lens. Its key features include face detection with automatic red-eye removal, a Panorama shooting mode, and full manual controls. The S1000fd will retail for $249.95 when it is released in April.

"With the FinePix S1000*fd*, Fujifilm is offering advanced amateur photographers an affordable, step-up digital camera," said David Troy, senior product manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc.

The S1000*fd* is the follow-up to last year’s 7.1-megapixels S700. In addition to boosting the megapixel count to 10 megapixels, the S1000*fd* increases the size of the LCD screen, from 2.5 to 2.7 inches, and keeps the same industry-standard 230,000 pixels. It boosts the optical zoom to 12x, up from the S700’s 10x zoom.

The S100*fd *also features an electronic viewfinder, in addition to the LCD screen.

Face detection on the S1000*fd *automatically focuses and exposes on up to six faces, then corrects red-eye based on the faces detected. The Panorama shooting mode automatically combines up to three consecutive images into one panoramic shot, but drops the resolution to 3 megapixels.

The compact features digital image stabilization, which automatically boosts the sensitivity and shutter speed to minimize blur. Users also have full manual control over the S1000*fd*, including controls like resolution, ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. In addition to manual control, the S1000*fd* has 14 Scene modes, covering the basics like Landscape, Sport, Night, and Portrait.

The S1000*fd* features a Burst mode that can capture 7.5 frames per second (fps) at 2 megapixels for 15 shots, 3.3 fps at 5 megapixels for six shots, and 1.4 fps at 10 megapixels for three shots. It captures VGA-quality movies with sound at 30 fps.

The compact is compatible with xD, SD, and SDHC memory cards, and runs on four AA batteries.
