November 29, 2004 — Leica’s much anticipated Digital-Module-R was scheduled for release in just a few days. However, the analog and digital hybrid camera will not be available until April 2005. A Leica press release stated, "The reason for this delay is that some software components that are needed for the universal insertion of the digital solution could not be realized up to our standards until now. A need for additional programming has surfaced."

The Digital-Module-R combines the Leica R8 and Leica R9. The camera supports both 35mm film and SD cards up to 2GB. The digital part of the camera has a 9.9-megapixel CCD and boasts an ISO range from 100 to 1600.
